That I Sing

That I Sing

Even though bottles and rocks at me they threw

growing up every 4th of July I wore red white and blue

My love for you has waxed and waned like the moon

I am a jilted lover trying not fall in love again too soon

Slavery, Jim Crow and even now my people you do offend

However; from all enemies , foreign and domestic it is you I will defend

I will fight you when you are wrong

and pray my faith in you will remain strong

But, in the end like a Cardinal in late spring

it’s of you America, that I sing
